Beat Hop

Getting your game ready…

How to play

Hop to the beat

The frog runs by itself. Tap, click, or press Space or the up arrow to hop, and hold to keep hopping each time it lands. Thorns and the sides of stones end the run, and so does a river, so hop over them or land on top of the stones. The bar at the top shows how far through the song you are.

Fireflies, lotus pads and flips

A lotus pad throws the frog high on its own. Tap while you touch a glowing firefly to hop again in mid-air. A turquoise ring with up arrows turns the frog upside down so it runs along the canopy; an orange ring with down arrows brings it back to the ground. Finish a song to clear it, and the next song starts after a short pause.

Strategy

Listen for the pluck

Every hop a song expects has its own bright pluck, sounding right where the tap belongs. Once you know a tune, hop with the plucks instead of waiting for the thorn to come close. Climbing stones play rising notes, and fireflies ring higher.

Practise the tricky bars

Practice plants a leaf flag on safe ground every couple of bars and brings you back to the last flag after a slip, with two beats to get ready. Small arrows on the ground show where the song wants a hop. A practice run never counts as a clear, so finish with a normal run once the hard part feels easy.

About the game

A song you can run through

Beat Hop is an original Fun Small Games rhythm runner in the style of Geometry Dash (RobTop Games, 2013), where the course moves at a steady speed and the obstacles follow the music. Each of the six songs here was written together with its course: one step of ground is one sixteenth note, so every stone, river and firefly sits on the beat. The songs speed up from 120 to 160 beats a minute and are played live in your browser.
