Jungle Volley

Getting your game ready…

How to play

Keep the coconut off your sand

Your frog plays on the left. Move with A and D or the arrow keys and jump with W, up or Space. On a phone, use the buttons under the court, or hold a finger on the court to run your frog there and flick upward to jump. The coconut bounces off your frog’s round back; if it lands on your side of the net, the other frog wins the point. Whoever wins a point serves the next one, and the first to 7 takes the match.

Climb the Jungle Cup or play a friend

The Jungle Cup has eight computer frogs, each sharper than the last. Beat one and the next court opens. Any win earns a star, holding your rival to four points or fewer earns two, and a 7–0 or 7–1 earns all three. Pick an open court from the list to replay it. Two players share one keyboard (Player 1 uses A, D and W; Player 2 uses the arrows) or one touch screen, where each player drags on their own half. P pauses.

Strategy

Stand a little behind the coconut

The coconut flies away from the spot where it meets your frog. Directly underneath sends it straight up again. Stand slightly on the far side of it from the net and it pops forward over the top; the further back you stand, the flatter and faster it goes. Watch its shadow on the sand to see exactly where it is.

Jump to smash, mix up your shots

When a coconut drops close to the net, jump just before it arrives and meet it with the front of your head on the way up. It fires down into the other court, which is very hard to return. Running into a hit adds pace too. Each computer frog has a habit, shown before the match: lob over a frog that guards the net, and drop it short against one that waits at the back.

About the game

Two blobs and a net

Slime Volleyball, whose original code is credited to Quin Pendragon in 1999, turned volleyball into two half-round players, gravity and a net. Its bounces are predictable, so every point feels fair. Jungle Volley keeps that idea with two frogs and a coconut, adds a cup of eight computer opponents with their own styles, and lets two friends share one screen.
