Seed Solitaire

Getting your game ready…

How to play

Leave one seed

Remove seeds by jumping until only one remains. Select a seed, then a marked empty landing two spaces away horizontally or vertically. The square between must hold a seed; that jumped seed leaves the board. You cannot slide into an adjacent empty recess.

Aim for the finish

Finish with your last seed in the central recess. One seed elsewhere is not a clear, even when there are no jumps left. Both the full board and shorter practice start use this finish. The cross-shaped board has empty recesses as well as occupied ones.

Keep a jump available

A board with several seeds and no legal jump is stuck. Undo restores a jump, including the removed seed, so you can explore a different sequence. Restart returns to that layout’s starting seeds. There is no clock or penalty for stopping to think.

Strategy

Plan the last landing

Work backwards from the desired final recess. You will need a jumping seed, a seed to jump over and the empty destination. Clearing the centre too early can leave it impossible to arrange that final approach.

Bring edge seeds inward

A seed stranded on an outer arm has few neighbours to help it move. Look for jumps that bring those seeds towards the middle before removing their partners. Taking any available jump can clear space while also cutting off the route you need next.

About the game

Seeds instead of cards

This is a solo jumping puzzle with wooden recesses and seed pegs. It shares the word Solitaire with the card game, but has no suits, deals or foundations. Completed layouts and your choice are remembered, with their jump counts; unfinished positions are not.
