How to play

Leave land and return

Move from claimed ground into the open area to draw a trail, then return to claimed ground to close it. Use arrows, the four hold buttons or a board swipe. Release a hold or use Stop to halt. A closed trail claims regions cut off from every patrol; an unfinished line is still exposed.

Protect the open trail

Patrols move inside the unclaimed area. Contact with your exposed player or trail costs a life, and crossing your own open trail is unsafe too. Plan the return point before leaving the protected ground.

Claim enough to continue

Claim seventy-five percent of the inner cells to finish a wave. Each newly claimed inner cell earns one point, and clearing a wave adds one hundred. Three lives carry through the increasingly busy waves. After a clear, the next wave starts following a short pause; Continue or a board tap skips it. Switching away cancels this advance until Continue. Pause or P freezes active play; returning requires Resume.

Strategy

Read the patrol before drawing

Wait on claimed land until a patrol moves away from your intended path. Then take a short route back to safety. A large possible region is less useful than a smaller one you can close before the patrol reaches the line.

Use your new boundary

A finished region gives you another safe edge to begin from. Work from that position instead of repeatedly crossing the widest open space. Keep track of your own line when turning so the return does not cross it.

About the game

Safety around the edge

Trail Painter turns completed boundaries into safe ground. Each claimed region offers a new starting edge, while patrols keep the remaining open area risky.
