Word Ladder

Getting your game ready…

How to play

Change one letter

Turn the starting four-letter word into the goal through a chain of accepted English words. Each new word must change exactly one letter from the last accepted word, keeping the other three in their positions. Rearranging the letters is a different move.

Submit a real step

Enter your next word and submit it with Add word or Enter. It must belong to the game’s dictionary, and you cannot repeat a word already used in the current path. There is no clock, so you can compare several possibilities before choosing.

Take another route

Undo takes back a step; Hint suggests a next word without adding it. New path offers another starting challenge. Reach the goal and another ladder follows after a short pause. There is no fixed session length. Switching away interrupts that continuation; Continue waits when you return.

Strategy

Look beyond the next word

A valid change may lead away from the letters you need. Before submitting, look for another ordinary word you could make after it. Sometimes changing a letter that already matches the goal opens a route back later.

Try a different word family

Changing a vowel can reveal several familiar neighbours. If that route stalls, consider consonants or another position. Undo lets you reconsider an accepted step without turning the puzzle into a race.

About the game

A path made of words

Word Ladder uses familiar four-letter vocabulary rather than a jungle-only word list. The changing word is the board: each accepted step records how you travelled from the start to the goal. Continuous ladders leave the stopping point to you.
