Jigsaw Jungle

Getting your game ready…

How to play

Drag a piece home

Pick up a piece from the tray and drop it on the board. When it lands close to where it belongs, it clicks into place. Two pieces that fit together also click together anywhere on the table, and then move as one. Tap a piece once to choose it, then tap the board to drop it there, if that is easier than dragging.

Pick a picture and a size

Pictures opens all twelve jungle scenes. Choose 12, 35 or 80 pieces at the top, then a picture. Each picture keeps its own unfinished board, so you can switch and come back later. Guide shows a faint copy of the picture on the board; turn it off for a harder puzzle. With a keyboard, arrows choose a piece, Enter lifts it, arrows aim at a square and Enter places it.

Strategy

Frame first

Pieces with a straight side belong on the border, and the four corners have two. Build the frame early and the middle has a shape to fill. On 35 and 80 pieces, Edges keeps only the border pieces in the tray until they are all out.

Sort by colour, then by shape

Pull pieces of one colour onto the table together: the turquoise river, the orange mango, the dark sky. Inside a colour, the knobs and holes tell you which way a piece faces. A piece that fits snaps on its own, so if it will not click, it belongs somewhere else.

About the game

It began as a map

In the early 1760s a young London engraver, John Spilsbury, glued a map to a thin wooden board and cut it apart along its borders so children could learn geography by putting the map back together. He called it a dissected map. The name jigsaw arrived much later, after puzzle makers took up the foot-powered saws of that name. Our pieces use the familiar knob-and-hole cut, drawn over the same jungle scenes as the game covers.

Leave it half done

An unfinished puzzle waits for you on this device with every piece where you left it, and each picture keeps its own board. The time at the end counts the minutes you spent playing, not the hours it sat waiting. Finished pictures get a tick in Pictures, with your best time at each size.
